In the year 2010 Nokia expects weaker performance where as the fourth largest producer of cellphones in the world, Sony Ericsson announced on Wednesday (16) that it will launch in the third quarter a smartphone with Android operating system in a company’s race to consolidate its recent return to profitability.
The company saw its market share back in recent quarters, partly due to the lack of attractive models of smartphones. The company will launch the Xperia X8, which is a cheaper model than the X10, which also uses Android. The X8 has 3-inch screen and 3.2 megapixel camera.
Smartphones were the most successful segment of the weak telecommunications market last year and the research firm Gartner estimates that the market will jump 46% this year compared to 172.4 million units shipped in 2009, driven by cheaper models.
On Wednesday, Nokia, the largest mobile phone maker in the world, issued a profit warning saying that the profitability of the unit cell will be weaker than expected for this quarter and 2010. The company cited a more competitive environment, marked by new rivals like Apple.
Sony Ericsson said that the models X10, X10 and X10 mini mini pro will have their software upgraded in the third quarter and additional resources will be offered.
The company also disclosed that the equipment will be upgraded to version 2.1 of Android and the ability to receive X10 video recording and high definition feature that will allow the device to connect wirelessly to display content on a TV screen.
