Despite the fact that Intel was the co-developer for the MeeGo, they have announced that the OS will support both the Intel Atom CPUs as well as ARM based processors. This move will make the MeeGo more usable with a wide variety of mobile phones.
According to Nokia, they will be fully adapting the MeeGo operating system for the newer N-series mobile phones. Originally, the Symbian OS was the platform of choice for the phone maker before they came out with a proprietary operating system, the Maemo. The Maemo OS made its debut last year with the launch of the Nokia N900. The device was a success and Nokia pursued the development of the new OS. Intel’s Moblin team had decided to team up with the developers of the Maemo and as a result, they made the MeeGo mobile platform.
While Nokia has already made the announcement regarding the N-series, they still have a couple N-series handsets that make use of the Symbian operating system. The upcoming Nokia N8 which is expected to launch this coming August to September, is going to be the last N-series handset to use the older OS. The N9, which has been seen recently in rumors, is expected to be moved to another Nokia phone series such as the C or E series.
Currently, the MeeGo OS developer build has been released by Nokia and Intel. The move to release the system months ahead of the OS’s official launch was done in order to attract developers and create a larger app library to support the launch of the MeeGo.
