Even Without iPhone, Verizon Is Gaining on AT&T

It is a question that the nation’s early adopters keep hearing from friends: when is the iPhone coming to Verizon?

The combination of the biggest cellphone carrier in the United States and Apple’s smash-hit phone would certainly be a powerful one. And it would be a major challenge to AT&T, which has been the exclusive carrier for the phone since its debut in 2007.
But Verizon could decide that it does not actually need the iPhone, thanks to its deepening ties with Google.
In big cities, AT&T’s network has buckled under the data-heavy demands of the iPhone, frustrating customers. Verizon has managed to avoid similar problems while working with Google, Apple’s latest nemesis, to offer several strong rivals to the iPhone that use the Android operating system from Google.
On Thursday, Verizon will begin selling the Droid X, an Android phone that many say may be the fiercest challenge yet to the iPhone, Steven P. Jobs’s crowning creation.
“Verizon is back in the game, even without the iPhone,” said Craig Moffett, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Company.
Despite the pull of the iPhone, Verizon has managed to steadily increase its share of the smartphone market, to 26 percent in May, from 20 percent in late 2008. In the same period, AT&T’s market share slipped to 40 percent, from around 45 percent, according to comScore. Those numbers do not take into account the impact of the popular iPhone 4, released last month.
Before the original iPhone’s debut, AT&T and Apple signed a five-year exclusive deal that is due to expire in 2012, according to court documents that emerged in a class-action lawsuit against Apple. Only insiders know whether that agreement has been amended.
When the phone proved to be a hit, Verizon appeared to be left out of the race for versatile phones running programs from third-party developers. Verizon was also not particularly friendly with Google, whose participation in an auction of precious wireless spectrum angered Verizon executives. Google wanted to force the federal government to require carriers to make their networks more open to a wide range of devices and software. Verizon executives were furious, vowing that they would not support the Android operating system.
A year later, Verizon recognized the threat posed by the iPhone and began working with Google and Motorola to develop the first of its Android phones, which it sold under the name Droid, a trademark it licensed from Lucasfilm.
Verizon has since collaborated closely with Google to develop six phones running Android, helping to give Google’s mobile operating system 13 percent of the smartphone market in the United States. In contrast, Apple has a 24 percent share, while Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, commands nearly 42 percent.
T-Mobile and Sprint have also jumped on the Android bandwagon. Matt Carter, president of Sprint’s 4G division, said the company was building a portfolio of smartphones that could run on its fourth-generation wireless network, including the Evo, an Android phone made by HTC.
“Obviously, we would love to have the iPhone, but we feel the HTC Evo is a better phone,” he said.
The success of its Android phones has emboldened Verizon to take shots at Mr. Jobs and the iPhone. A recent ad slyly referred to the controversy over the iPhone 4’s antenna design in boasting that the Droid X “allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal-clear calls.”
“Verizon is behaving as if it’s not going to get the iPhone anytime soon,” said Charles Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Company. “The signal I’m getting from the intimacy of Google and Verizon is that it is certainly an engagement, if not a marriage.”
Reports from analysts and the news media have predicted, with almost comic regularity, an iPhone debut on Verizon in the next week, next month or next year. Representatives for Verizon and Apple declined to comment on the matter.
Neither company will rule out the possibility of an eventual union. For Apple, millions of untapped Verizon customers are at stake. Analysts say that a partnership between the two companies could double Apple’s smartphone share — a crucial jump if Mr. Jobs hopes to stay ahead of Google.
At a technology conference last month, when Mr. Jobs was asked whether the iPhone could appear on rival networks, he replied that “the future is long.”
John Stratton, chief marketing officer at Verizon, said in an interview that his company “had a lot of respect” for Apple.
“They have served the industry very well,” he said. “The smartphone category is now growing faster than any other part of our business, and in no small part, that is something we can trace back to the creation of the iPhone.”
A Verizon-Apple coupling faces some obstacles. In particular, Verizon maintains an ironclad grip over the phones on its network, steering marketing campaigns, stamping each device with a prominent logo and often installing its own applications, like its VZ Navigator mapping program.

Google Soon to Announce the Gphone

Google is reportedly working on a mobile handset to speed up the mobile ad distribution process. Rumors are flying that Google is getting ready to launch the ‘Gphone’, or at least the software and services needed for an open platform wireless phone to function. This morning the Wall Street Journal reported that a Gphone software unveiling will be coming soon.
What will the Gphone do for the average consumer? Maybe free cell phone service!
Same as the free search model applied to mobile service – receive ads in lieu of paying for airtime. If someone were to offer a free, ad-supported mobile option, Google would be among the most likely to succeed.
Extending their Adword service from the computer screen to the cell phone screen seems only natural. Google has already extended its ads from the web to print and radio ads, its mobile advertising offering has already been established, along with its search capabilities and GMail integration, among other applications.
Google is trying to loosen the grip wireless carriers have over the software and services consumers can access on cell phones. An almost impossible task since wireless carriers control distribution of phones to consumers through their retail stores. But Google may be up to the task.
There is much speculation that Google will bid in an upcoming FCC spectrum auction. Next year the FCC will auction licenses in the 700 mHz band. Originally used for analog TV and owned by a variety of broadcasters, the TV channels using this spectrum are going to go dark on Feb. 19, 2009.
The FCC has described the 700 MHz as beachfront property, and has talked up its broadband capabilities. About 60 MHz of the former UHF (TV) spectrum is going to be reclaimed by the U.S. government and will be reallocated for public safety and commercial broadband networks. Google has openly fought for the FCC to require the adoption of four types of “open” platforms as part of the auction:
- Open applications: consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire;
- Open devices: consumers should be able to utilize their handheld communications device with whatever wireless network they prefer;
- Open services: third parties (resellers) should be able to acquire wireless services from a 700 MHz licensee on a wholesale basis, based on reasonably nondiscriminatory commercial terms; and
- Open networks: third parties (like Internet service providers) should be able to interconnect at any technically feasible point in a 700 MHz licensee’s wireless network.
Google is of course concerned about you and I; an open network would promote a spirit of openness, and could spur additional forms of competition from web-based entities, such as software applications providers, content providers, handset makers, and ISPs.
In their Official Blog Google says “The big winners” are consumers. “As choices increase, prices come down and more Americans have access to the Net”.

Velocity Micro Takes on Apple With $299 Android Tablet

PC maker Velocity Micro on Tuesday announced the US$299 Cruz Tablet computer, a handheld device that is priced significantly lower than Apple's popular iPad tablet, which is available starting at $499.
The Cruz tablet will provide a "truly mobile experience at an affordable price," Velocity Micro said in a statement. The tablet will come with Google's Android OS and is slated to become available on Sept. 1, according to the company.

However, there are differences between the Cruz and iPad, including screen size and storage. The Cruz tablet comes with a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, which is smaller than Apple's 9.7-inch screen.

The Cruz also comes with 4GB of internal storage and 8GB of storage through an SD slot, while the most inexpensive iPad model comes with 16GB of storage.

The Cruz provides around six hours of battery life when watching video, while Apple claims up to 10 hours of iPad battery life when surfing the Web, watching video or listening to music. The Cruz comes with 802.11n Wi-Fi capabilities, which is at par with the iPad.

The Cruz tablet will be able to play back 720p high-definition video, said Josh Covington, a Velocity Micro spokesman. The screen will display images at a 800 by 480-pixel resolution.

The company could not provide processor details as the device hasn't reached production phase, Covington said.

Velocity Micro is jumping into a tablet market that is growing at a fast rate, primarily driven by Apple's iPad. Apple in June said it had sold 3 million iPads in the first 80 days after its release. Research firm IDC has said tablet shipments could top 7 million by the end of this year and exceed 46 million by 2014.

Many device makers have either announced or intend to ship tablets based on Android OS. Dell has already shipped its Streak tablet, which comes with a 5-inch touch-capable screen. Cisco has announced the Cius business tablet, which has a 7-inch screen and will become available for testing later this year. Other companies planning to launch Android tablets include Notion Ink and Innovative Converged Devices.

Velocity Micro also announced an e-reader, the $199 Cruz Reader, which will also include a 7-inch screen. The device will provide access to more than 2 million e-books available via Borders' e-book library application. Users will be able read e-books in multiple formats, including ePub and PDF. The device will provide up to 10 hours of run time on a single battery charge. The e-reader will ship in August.

Dual SIM phone brand takes a shine to fashion

WHEN A mobile phone brand was launched in the market in 2006, it prided itself on being the first and only Filipino brand that offered dual SIM mobility.
Instead of lugging around two phones daily, one could buy a My/Phone unit and easily switch from one SIM to another.

In the months following the launch, Solid Group, Inc., which distributes My/Phone, came out with different units. What linked them together and set them apart continued to be their dual SIM (subscriber identity module).

Fresh out of the box, the phones were shiny and new but strictly utilitarian. They had few of the bells and whistles most phone users have come to expect.

So it was quite a surprise when the brand announced that it was coming out with its first “fashion” phone complete with a glittery launch at Greenbelt 5 in Makati last week.

Unlike its utilitarian siblings, the S Q27 Duo is obviously geared towards women and is designed to remind one of a powder compact.

Instead of flipping it open, one swivels it in such a way to reveal a Qwerty keyboard.

In keeping with the compact angle, one side has a mirrored finish perfect for quick touch-ups. What its distributors are particularly proud of, however, are the Swarovski cubic zirconia stones that serve as the Menu and Call buttons.

In an interview with Jingo P. Fermin, president of Mytel Mobility Solutions, Inc. prior to the show, he told BusinessWorld that they came up with a fashion phone to show that they were ready to play with the big mobile phone players.

“Our phones all still offer dual SIM mobility but with the S Q27 Duo, we want to show potential customers that we can also do fashion,” Mr. Fermin said.

The unit is a tri-band phone with features like Bluetooth capability, a two-mega pixel camera and an FM radio. It has an expandable memory card slot of up to 8 GB. My/Phone’s first offering from its fashion series retails for P5,990. -- R. J. Chee Kee

T-Mobile drops price on Garmin Phone, but will anyone notice?

Back in May Garmin and T-Mobile announced their newest offering in that of the Garmin-Asus. While it is the only phone on the market that is clearly sporting some of the best navigation around, it is pretty obvious that its launch and visibility are not doing so well.
Two months after the release of the second generation Garminfone, the price of the device has dropped at no surprise to really anyone. The first Garmin phone to release was the Nuvifone, which did not do particularly well under the At&t moniker. So what to do in that situation if you are Garmin? It’s simple really, add Android and send the phone to a different carrier. T-Mobile announced the new Asus back in May and in regard to the news this morning of the price drop; it is pretty evident that the Garmin model is stagnant on T-Mobiles shelf. So what to do in this situation? The only thing you can do, drop the price. When officially launched in May the new Garmin-Asus was priced at 200 bucks with a new contract. A short two months later the price has been dropped to a more reasonable 129 and the usual contract time frame still applies. But it is hard to tell if the Garmin based GPS is worth anything to smart phone shoppers.
With the advent of app stores, it is hard to say that you will need Garmin GPS. Now don’t get me wrong I understand that Garmin’s GPS is legendary and one of if not the best in navigation industry. Most people that would be interested in this model probably already have a Garmin and or Tom Tom in their cars. So the thought of needing a phone that can do the same is, well, redundant.
So tell me what you think?
Does the price drop on the new Garmin phone mean you will be picking one up?
I for one still think that the price is too high, this phone would do better under the free moniker, or would it?
Sound off let us know what you think of the new Garmin Asus!

The internet connectivity supports both Dual band and Quad Band frequencies. It supports EDGE, GRSP, and Class 10 internet providers. This phone is very good for office use as well. It offers a wide variety of messaging and email options for one to stay in contact with the office from a remote location. It stores 1000 contacts in the address book and features a calculator, a calendar, and an alarm clock to alert you to prior appointments.

There are several things that the C3050 doesn’t offer. It doesn’t offer a direct USB connection for access to your computer or Wi-Fi connection. It also doesn’t support GPS programs. This phone doesn’t record video either. Another complaint often heard is that the slider parts often break apart with very little pressure, leaving one with a phone in two parts!

Google Android App Open Spot Helps Drivers Find Parking

Google has created an experimental Android application called Open Spot to help drivers find parking spots, a cool tool for time-constrained people who have neither the time nor inclination to troll for empty spots.
Launched from Google Labs July 9, Open Spot will show drivers parking spots located within a .9 mile radius of their location, marked by colored dots on the app's map.
Newly vacated spots are marked by red dots, with orange and yellow pins pointing to spots that opened 5 and 10 minutes ago, respectively. Parking spots are automatically refreshed as drivers move around the lots, and spots are removed from the map after 20 minutes.
Drivers who leave a parking spot must tap the Mark a Spot button on the app to help fellow users in their quest for parking. In a theme right out of incentive-based location applications such as Foursquare and Gowalla, those who do so will earn so-called Karma Points.
Google already has a name for those who try to game the game by calling attention to spots when there really aren't any: griefers.
"We're watching for behavior that looks like a griefer spoofing parking spots. We have a couple of mechanisms available to make sure someone can't leave a bunch of fake parking spots. If we see this happening we will take steps to fix it."
However, the app requires regular participation from drivers with fellow Android phones.
While 100,000 Android phones are shipping daily, it is unlikely these are in a concentrated area to make Open Spot truly useful and relevant. To wit, parking lots at Google's Mountain View, Calif. headquarters are likely the greatest test bed for Open Spot.
Google is calling on Android phone users to tell their friends and neighbors to use Open Spot to help make the network "bigger and better for everyone."
AI has already suggested Google add a parking prices layer to Open Spot. Another user suggested Google integrate the app with Google Maps Labs. Another wants the ability to clear a spot they just marked.
Most simply want Google to release an API for the experimental app.
Open Spot is currently available in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands. Eligible Android phone owners may download the application hereby scanning its QR code with their phone. Users can also download it from the Android Market.

Moto WX445 surfaces as Verizon's low-end, touch-only Android

A scoop this Saturday has uncovered a new, low-end Android phone destined for Verizon. Motorola's WX445 -- likely to receive a more elaborate name later -- would be touchscreen-only and have a three-inch or smaller, standard resolution touchscreen. Unlike its cousin the Devour, it wouldn't have a QWERTY keyboard, and is described by an Engadget source as resembling a palm pre, only with a cheaper look.
Not much else is known about the phone, but it would have the same lower-profile Blur interface as the Droid X and a small but possibly still adequate 1,170mAh battery. Next to the camera is an unusual square patch; whether that's related to the camera or a backside trackpad isn't known.

Launch info is equally as mysterious, and the phone currently runs Android 2.1 despite the likelihood that the Droid X and original Droid will both have 2.2 before the WX445 arrives. The existence of a working, Verizon-labeled example hints that the wait for the phone may be short and that it could at least be ready before the end of the year.
